Shakur Stevenson Reveals How He Scored Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach From Ringside: “He Hurt Him”

Shakur Stevenson was ringside to watch Gervonta Davis put his WBA Lightweight World Title on the line against Lamont Roach Jr in Brooklyn.

Though ‘Tank’ stepped through the ropes a heavy favourite to score the 29th knockout of his career, Roach was on a mission to spoil the party and gave an excellent account of himself, willing to stand with the big puncher from Baltimore.

After twelve competitive rounds the fight was called a majority draw, however referee Steve Willis’ bizarre decision not to call a knockdown when ‘Tank’ took a knee in round nine means that victory was snatched away from Roach.

Stevenson, who has been chasing a unification bout with Davis, told Cigar Talk that he feels the challenger won.

“I seen Lamont winning. I really felt like he was in control of the fight. I think Tank had good moments, I feel like when he was boxing boring he was more in control. When he tried to fight I felt like Lamont was on point.”

Stevenson, who has held the WBC belt since late 2023, feels Davis underestimated Roach.

“I feel as though Tank didn’t understand or realise how good Lamont was. He kind of was sleeping on him. I felt as though Lamont was catching him when he was not expecting it. [Tank] would throw and he’s not used to certain s**t coming back. When s**t start coming back, it caught him by surprise.”

Asked if his foe was hurt in the fight, Shakur had no doubt.

“Hell yeah. For sure. Matter fact, there was a point in the fight when Tank threw a left hand, he caught Lamont, and Lamont threw right back and he wobbled Tank. Tank felt his power.”

‘Tank’ Davis has since announced that he wants an immediate rematch with Roach, and said he can be ready as early as May. Stevenson, who recently defended his belt against late replacement Josh Padley, will likely defend his own title against a contender before a unification be discussed again.
