Smallville star Erica Durance shares her reaction to David Corenswet's Superman costume and James Gunn's DC Universe. While the DC Universe will begin later this year with the Creature Commandos TV show, Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," will properly begin with the new Superman movie next summer. Even though Superman has yet to release any footage, the first look at Corenswet in the new Man of Steel suit has become widely talked about among superhero movie fans.
In an interview with YouTube creator Adam Lupis, Durance and the host had a discussion about Corenswet and Henry Cavill's respective versions of Superman and their costumes, as the Smallville actress got to react to seeing their suits side-by-side. While Durance was a big fan of Cavill's take on Superman, the Lois Lane star also shared high praise for Corenswet's new suit, stating the following:
Yeah, they both look like Henry to me; that's how much those actors look the same [laughs]. So what I can see, I like the color of the S on Henry's better, but it could be just like the shading. What are people saying about it? Are they saying it doesn't have enough muscles built in? I liked that! [talking about Man of Steel] I thought he looked fantastic; he's gorgeous, and he was wonderful for it. He looks like a real human, which is what you want Superman to be.
I like that it's going back a little old school, and if I spoke it, I don't know if I like the yellow as much as I like the color on Henry's [suit], but I would say he might be trying to go retro, which might really be an interesting thing. Maybe he's going to take the whole color scheme and push the way he tells the story.
You had him [David] kind of sitting in it. He was sitting and putting his boots on, and it was a much more casual kind of pose. It will be interesting to see what they do with that. I didn't know that was this big thing people didn't like the shorts over the top of the tights. But that is what Christopher Reeve had; I like it, but I'm the person in the world that I was talking about before; I want things to kind of pull back and look back. I want us to reflect, I want to slow down, I want to feel nostalgic about cool things that happened before.
Why DC Fans Are Split On David Corenswet & Henry Cavill's Supermen
When Cavill became Superman for the DCEU movie timeline, the discussion of his costume design was a massive topic. A lot of longtime DC fans were not fond of the idea of a very different approach to Clark Kent's classic suit, as Man of Steel became the first Superman movie not to feature him with trunks, and move away completely from spandex and tights. However, a lot of audience members responded well to the armor-based suit that came from Clark's Kryptonian culture.
In Corenswet's case, there have been a mixture of reactions when it comes to his suit. There are those who are in favor of a more old school look for Superman in Gunn's DC Universe, even though the costume is clearly pulling inspiration from The New 52 and DC Rebirth suits. However, many have also commented that Corenswet's Superman costume looks cheap and more like cosplay than a Hollywood-produced suit, while also looking at it as a downgrade from Cavill's version.
When it comes to adapting superhero costumes for live-action properties, there will always be a massive divide, since everyone has their own preferences about what a suit should look like outside the comics. Time will tell if those who were critical of Corenswet's Superman costume will have a better response once they see more of him in the suit and through actual footage. Hopefully, it won't be much longer until Gunn reveals the first Superman trailer so everyone can see the costume in action.
