The Pittsburgh Steelers' ongoing quest to solidify their starting quarterback position has captivated fans, with veteran Aaron Rodgers remaining the frontrunner of speculation. The team's pursuit of a franchise quarterback has been marked by a series of strategic moves, including the recent departure of Justin Fields, a player known for his dynamic ability to extend plays with his legs. The Steelers' proactive approach to addressing their quarterback depth was shown by their acquisition of quarterback Skylar Thompson and the re-signing of Mason Rudolph, both of whom are valuable backup options for the upcoming season.
Adding to the buzz surrounding the Steelers' quarterback search, reports have surfaced indicating that the team has already extended a formal contract offer to Rodgers, suggesting that they are now in a patient waiting game. This flurry of activity leaves one prominent figure in the Steelers' quarterback narrative: Russell Wilson. His current status and potential future with the team remain a topic of considerable discussion, as the Steelers navigate the complex landscape of free agency and draft preparations.
Wilson's situation mirrors that of the Steelers, as he too finds himself awaiting the outcome of Rodgers' decision. This shared predicament has led Wilson to explore other potential opportunities, as shown by his visits to several NFL franchises, including the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns. The Giants, one of the teams Wilson visited, are also reportedly in the mix for Rodgers, highlighting the overlapping interests and complex dynamics of the current quarterback market. Furthermore, other teams, such as the Minnesota Vikings, have also been linked to Rodgers, highlighting the widespread interest in the veteran quarterback. Insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shared an interesting update regarding Wilson and provided confirmation regarding Wilson's visits.
"Wilson visited with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday and the Giants on Friday, but did not reach agreement with either team. His preference is to re-sign with the Steelers, but it has become apparent the team is not in any hurry to do so, if at all," Dulac reported.
Wilson's exploration of alternative opportunities, has reportedly led to less than desirable results. Despite his efforts to gain interest and assess potential fits with franchises, Wilson's endeavors have not translated into the concrete offers he may have anticipated. This lack of immediate traction in the free agency market has undoubtedly added to the uncertainty surrounding his future, particularly as the quarterback landscape continues to evolve.
Dulac says he doesn't know why the Rodgers talks are taking so long, but he's pretty sure he knows what it's not about.
"Sources said the delay in the Steelers' discussions with Rodgers was not about money," Dulac added.
The fact that Rodgers' decision appears to hinge on team fit, an area where Wilson is confident in, only deepens the complexity of his situation. It appears this compatibility is not mutual for Wilson, as the Steelers are showing no sense of urgency in signing Wilson, and may ultimately pass on him entirely.
Does Wilson Match The Steelers' Long-Term Goals?
Wilson's entry into the Steelers' starting lineup was met with mixed reactions. Upon recovering from a calf injury by Week 7 of last season, his return directly led to Fields' benching, despite Fields leading the team to a promising 4-2 start. In his 11 starts, Wilson compiled 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. His performance led the Steelers to another playoff berth, as well as secured himself a Pro Bowl selection.
Regardless of whether the Steelers ultimately acquire Rodgers or, despite differing opinions, retain Wilson, neither quarterback is viewed as a long-term solution for the franchise, even though Wilson himself seems to envision a future with the team. Dulac provided further insights into this complex situation.
"No matter which option they chose, they will not give any quarterback they bring in anything more then a one-year contract," Dulac shared.
This reinforces the notion that the Steelers remain committed to drafting a quarterback in the near future, whether in the upcoming draft or the following year. This strategy highlights the importance of intangible qualities such as mentorship and leadership, in addition to on-field talent, in their quarterback selection. While the Steelers' disinterest in Wilson might seem definitive, his availability suggests that both Rodgers and Wilson remain viable options.
