The Pittsburgh Steelers let Russell Wilson walk in free agency, leading to him signing with the New York Giants on Tuesday. Justin Fields also left earlier in the 2025 offseason, but if the intent was to make way for a more productive signal-caller in the Steel City, the move seems to have backfired. The Steelers are left waiting for quarterback Aaron Rodgers as their best option left. One NFL analyst has proposed a possible alternative to Rodgers and thinks that the Steelers are the prime landing spot for one AFC South talent.
ESPN radio host Evan Cohen said that, regardless of what happens with Rodgers, the Steelers should try and acquire Tennessee Titans quarterback, Will Levis.
It would be a surprising move as Levis' name hasn't been thrown around much when talking about the Steelers' next quarterback. However, as Pittsburgh's hunt for a new signal-caller drags on, and more names like Wilson and Fields drop out of the running, prospects like Levis may become more likely.
Levis was drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In his two years in the NFL, Levis has started in 21 games. It doesn't seem like Levis' presence made much of an impact, as in his time with Tennessee, the Titans had two losing seasons.
The quarterback has 21 passing touchdowns and a 61 percent completion rate. By the numbers, Levis isn't remarkable. However, he's a young player with room to grow. The Steelers' increasingly scary offense could be the tools Levis needs to put up efficient numbers.
Steelers And Levis Could Be The Perfect Pair
The Steelers have largely focused on signing offensive talent in free agency so far. Some of the most notable players acquired have been DK Metcalf, Kenneth Gainwell, and and on the defensive side of the ball, Darius Slay. Surprisingly, the Steelers' lack of a starting quarterback (with all due respect to Mason Rudolph) doesn't seem to have scared away many top talents during free agency. Now, it may be up to the potential of the offense to sell the team to potential quarterbacks. Many quarterbacks would be lucky to have both Metcalf and George Pickens as targets during a game.
For a young quarterback in Levis' position, the Steelers seem to be a prime place to land. Levis hasn't had an impressive two years in the NFL, but the quarterback's career is just getting started. Now is the time that he would want the opportunity to prove himself as a bona fide starting quarterback, before becoming doomed to be a perpetual backup. The Steelers' weapons, like Metcalf and Pickens, would give Levis all the targets he would need to prove he has what it takes to lead an offense.
How does Levis factor into the Steelers' current quarterback search? Right now, it seems like Pittsburgh has its heart set on Rodgers. The team has patiently waited for the 41-year-old quarterback to make his decision, all while other candidates such as Wilson and Fields have signed elsewhere.
As Cohen originally suggested, the Steelers could acquire Levis, regardless of what happens to Rodgers. There is a possibility that the Steelers obtain Rodgers and Levis, with Levis as quarterback two or three (QB2 or QB3). However, with Rudolph already on the roster as a reliable backup, the Steelers may not want to pay for Levis just to be a second or third-string player.
At this time, Rodgers seems to be the Steelers' most likely starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Should anyone else, like Levis, be vying for the position, they will have to wait for an answer until Rodgers is signed, or completely out of the question.
