Steelers Predicted to 'Move On' from Veteran QB in Free Agency

Pittsburgh continues to mull over its options under center for 2025. Last season, the Steelers turned over their quarterback room and kicked Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett to the proverbial curb.

They signed free agent Russell Wilson and traded for Justin Fields, who played out the final year of his rookie deal signed in Chicago.

General manager Omar Khan has indicated the team could welcome either Wilson or Fields back in 2025, but not both. And neither really set himself apart from the other during the season.

But Bleacher Report doesn't think it will be Wilson, as it's named the former Broncos and Seahawks signal caller as a player the Steelers will "most likely move on from."

Two plugged-in NFL insiders believe that Wilson will sign with a new team in the offseason. While on NBC's Fantasy Football Happy Hour, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer dismissed the idea of Wilson signing with the Las Vegas Raiders or re-signing with the Steelers.

“That ain’t gonna happen,” Glazer said about Wilson signing with the Raiders. "That one is over. I don’t think that’s gonna happen, either (re-sign with the Steelers). I think you’ll see a new start for Russell somewhere.”

The Athletic's Dianna Russini shared what she heard about the Steelers' quarterback plan while on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

“Those conversations started to happen at the end of the season," Russini said. "They decided, ‘Alright, we’re gonna probably most likely stick with Justin Fields here moving forward.”

Wilson started 11 games last season and threw for 2,482 yards while completing 63.7 percent of his pass attempts. One of the issues in returning him is his projected value. Spotrac.com projects Wilson to earn $38.7 million next season on the open market.

That's a lot for a 38-year-old quarterback, but some team who's desperate for a veteran presence under center just might pay it. But it most likely won't be Pittsburgh.
