Mellencamp, who is currently undergoing immunotherapy and radiation for the tumors in her lungs and brain, shared how her children are handling her cancer diagnosis during an April 2025 Extra TV interview. She said that she and her estranged husband, Edwin Arroyave‘s daughters “are all pretty okay” and have been asking questions. She said, however, that their son is “a little confused” about the situation and will often check if she is breathing while she is asleep.

Mellencamp also said while she believes she is “going to beat” the cancer, she does “get sad at the idea of not.”

“My kids are young. I still have a lot more trouble to cause. And I’m going to fight as hard as I can. But it’s scary,” said Mellencamp during the Extra TV interview.

During an April 2025 Us Weekly interview, Mellencamp said that she believes her children are “a bit scared” about her health.

“I’m going to fight really hard. I can’t imagine my life without them, so I’m going to do everything I possibly can, no matter how mean it makes me. [Laughs] I can’t imagine — does this sound like a narcissist? — I can’t imagine any of them living without me,” said Mellencamp to Us Weekly.
