Teddi Mellencamp Shares the One Thing That Helps Her Through Cancer Diagnosis

Teddi Mellencamp Details 50/50 Odds Amid Cancer Treatment

Teddi Mellencamp revealed to “Nightline” on April 11 all the highs and lows she’s experiencing while undergoing treatment for stage four cancer.

“Sometimes I feel really strong and beautiful and like I can do anything. And sometimes I feel like this might be the lowest and the hardest things I’ve ever done,” she admitted.

After recounting waking up from her brain surgery and seeing her family surrounding her, Mellencamp was asked how she keeps her sense of humor.

“I have to. If I didn’t find humor, I would cry,” she answered. “Even with my kids, the other day, we kept forgetting something. And we’d all just go, ‘The tumors!'”

Mellencamp continued, “It’s kind of the only way because if not, I would just be crying all the time.”

As for Mellencamp’s pending divorce from her estranged husband Edwin Arroyave, the former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star shared, “We want what’s best for our kids. And I’m no longer in the situation where I was able to do everything 100 percent as I was before.”

Mellencamp’s Ex Has Stayed by Her Side Throughout Cancer Battle

Despite their separation, Arroyave has supported Mellencamp during her health crisis. During an April 3 episode of “The Eds,” he explained that after learning of his estranged wife’s diagnosis, his first concern was making sure that she was okay.

“My first thought was getting her in a good place and then getting the kids in a good place,” Arroyave told his co-host Eddie Judge.

“No matter what, I will always love Teddi, and she’s been a big part of my life, and I like taking care of people. It’s just what I do. So it wasn’t even like a question. It was reflexive,” he said.

Arroyave commended Mellencamp’s loved ones for being there for her as well and stated, “I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did if it wasn’t for her friends and family.”

He added, “The first thing is just making sure that we take care of this first and all that other stuff. We’ll see what happens with time. But for right now, it’s just more of like, how do we take care of you? … That other stuff will figure itself out.”

As for their kids, Arroyave revealed, “I tried my best to again not sugarcoat it too much. I called it the way it was. It’s like, ‘Hey, there’s some tumors that your mom has in her brain.'”

“And I said, ‘It sounds worse than what it is, but this is what I think is, this is what we think is going to happen. This is sort of how we’re going to deal with it, and this is why I’m confident that she’s going to make it through,'” he said.
