In a January 8 Instagram upload, Wharton shared a picture of himself on a hospital gurney before his surgery.

In the caption of the post, he said he hoped this would be his “last procedure for [his] knees.” He stated that “this will be [his] 3rd ACL” surgery.

“The first surgery that I had back in September was to remove the metal that was in my knee from a bone lengthening surgery I had done 9 years ago. The metal was ultimately in the way of where we wanna put the new ACL. we ended up using my patella for a graft and they also tightened my IT band to help with stability some. 🙌🏽 it’s gonna be a long road to recovery but nothing I haven’t already been through,” wrote Wharton.

In addition, Wharton said he injured himself while competing against Josh Martinez during “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.”

“For everybody asking, in my elimination against Josh I tore it sprinting in the sand. The sand already being an unstable surface sprinting in it just completely rupture the ACL,” shared Wharton.

In addition, Wharton expressed gratitude to those who have checked in on him.

“Thanks to all how have prayed and reached out ❤️🙏🏽,” wrote Wharton.

Wharton concluded his caption by sharing he is thinking of those in Southern California who have been affected by the fires.

“I also want to say this, to all those families that were affected by the fires 🔥 stay safe & our prayers are with you LA🌴We don’t have power but we are safe & that’s what’s important. 🙏🏽,” wrote Wharton.

Several fans took the time to share words of encouragement in the post’s comments section.

“❤️❤️ prayers for a safe surgery and great recovery!! Get back at it and get this challenge win!! You’re my FAVE!! ❤️❤️,” wrote a commenter.

“Good luck & hope you have a speedy recovery,” added another.

“Good luck! I tore my same knee twice so I feel your pain. I hope you picked the best cadaver ligament from the donor bank. It does make a difference which I didn’t know until my second surgery and my knee feels so much better compared to my first. Hopefully you recover quickly!” shared a different person.

Cory Wharton Spoke About Competing With Josh Martinez

In a December 2024 interview with Gold Derby, Wharton spoke about competing with Martinez. He said he was unhappy with how Martinez handled himself on “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.” According to Wharton, Martinez was not authentic when filming the MTV show.

“I’m not with the whole ‘I got you. I’m looking out for you.’ And then any chance that you get, you don’t do that,” said Wharton. “And then you want to say in the episode, ‘Yeah, bro, you’re like family.’ I’m like, ‘Well, treat me like family.'”
