When the Kansas City Chiefs drafted speed merchant Xavier Worthy in the first round, many couldn't wait to see him and Patrick Mahomes link up for those famous long bombs on offense.
Armed with 4.21 speed, if Worthy gets into open space, it's over. However, through the first eight weeks, Xavier, as some rookies do, was a little up and down with his form as he got used to the rigors of NFL football.
But in the last three weeks, Worthy has found some consistency in his game, and the product he's putting on the field is exactly what head coach Andy Reid would have wanted.
And now he's no longer the secret weapon at Mahomes' disposal.
“He's getting better, I think that's what we all can see,” Reid said. “It's not a secret, he's putting that out there for everybody to see, and my main concern is that he just keeps doing that. That's what you want to do, keep working to better yourself, and let's just see where it all ends up.
He's doing a nice job, he's got the trust of the quarterback, he's got the trust of the coaches, he playing fast, looks like he's gotten his legs back from training camp in the early part of the season so all of that's positive stuff. But you gotta keep putting the product out.”
In his first eight games, Worthy only surpassed 40 receiving yards just twice. He's done that in his last three games with totals of 61, 46, and 54 while averaging at least four receptions in each game.
So the progress is there for all to see, and what is a rather startling stat, Worthy is second in yards (407) behind only Travis Kelce (637) on the Chiefs roster, so the rookie is beginning to heat up.
As a result, he will be getting far more attention from defensive coordinators who now view him as one weapon they must stop if they are to halt the Chiefs juggernaut.
