A retired three-weight world champion has launched a verbal assault on heavyweight icon Muhammad Ali.
The late, great Ali is often regarded as the greatest fighter in the history of boxing, with a legacy that still lives on to this day. His career spanned for just over 20 years, where he captured the world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions.
His crowning moment came in February 1964 when he defeated Sonny Liston, a feat that he repeated in their rematch just one year later. He then went on to claim historic victories against the likes of Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and George Foreman.
Despite receiving plaudits from many of boxing’s biggest names, there is one well known former fighter who does not agree with his moniker ‘The Greatest’.
In an interview on WiseNuts, former middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight world champion James Toney shared his thoughts on the former undisputed heavyweight champion as he claimed he believes he is not the greatest fighter of all time.
“Everybody love Ali but he ain’t the greatest fighter of all time. When he was Cassius Clay, he was great. Ali is trash … I know we got a whole bunch of fans, I’m a fan myself, but I’m sorry, he is not the greatest fighter of all time.”
Toney then revealed who he actually believes is the greatest fighter of all time.
“The greatest fighter of all time is Sugar Ray Robinson. He fought beautiful, Ali wanted to be him, that was his idol. Ali tried to fight like him – he tried – but he couldn’t do it.”
Ali’s legacy is certainly undeniable, but the same can indeed be said about fellow boxing legend Sugar Ray Robinson.
In a glittering 25-year career, Robinson fought on over 200 occasions, where he successfully became a six-time world champion. His most notable victory came against Jake LaMotta, who he defeated via 13th round knockout back in February 1951.
