Saquon Barkley signed a two-year contract extension worth $41.2 million last week, marking him the highest-paid running back in the history of football.
It's the first time a player at the position has earned more than $20 million in a season.
Barkley earned his pay day through setting a franchise rushing record of 2,005 yards and leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory.
Travis Kelce, who was on the other side of the 40-22 title win over the Kansas City Chiefs, discussed Barkley's new deal with his brother Jason on their "New Heights" podcast.
On the podcast, the brothers usually share differing opinions when it comes to all things Eagles as Jason is two seasons into retirement from a Hall of Fame-worthy career in Philadelphia.
They both shared that they are happy for Barkley, but when Jason noted that $15 million of his contract was in the form of incentives, Travis objected.
“Ew,” Travis said. “I don’t like that. I don’t like that one bit.”
“Does he have to get a 2,000-yard season every year? (expletive)," Jason replied.
Jason shared that he has experience with incentive-driven contracts and that they included being named All-Pro or making it into the Pro Bowl.
“So you have to rely on someone’s vote to get your incentive?” Travis asked. “Ew! Damn, that’s (expletive) up.”
The influence of player earnings by voters is not an uncommon practice in the NFL. As both brothers mentioned, Barkley’s contract also included $36 million guaranteed at signing, ensuring he's not being shortchanged by the team.
