Tristan Wirfs Reveals Emotional 'Whirlwind' Liam Coen Saga

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a different offensive coordinator for the third season in a row. It's safe to say that continuity has not even approached the Tampa Bay offense during that time although the Bucs have had a measure of success.

Tristan Wirfs Reveals Emotional 'Whirlwind' Liam Coen Saga

Last season's offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, led quarterback Baker Mayfield through his second career season in a row, as he hit the best passing numbers since entering the league.

But the story of Coen leaving the Bucs is probably more interesting than the fact that he left. After interviewing for the Jags head coaching position, Coen pulled his name from consideration and accepted a raise to stay in Tampa Bay.

Coen then met with Jacksonville ownership again in secret, literally ghosting the Bucs as they attempted to reach him by phone and text, then took the job he had already turned down with the Jags.

Bucs offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs described the ordeal as he and the rest of the offensive line found out about it.

"It was kinda crazy because the whole o-line was together. We went on a little trip, so we're all seeing it break on Twitter. We saw he was back with the Bucs, and then we saw like 'No, he's in Jacksonville', and then they tried to block something. It was a whirlwind, really."

Wirfs is happy for Coen and holds no grudge.

"And then he calked us and he told us that he loves us and appreciates us. It is a business — you don't know when an opportunity like that to go live your dream and be a head coach is going to come around. We understood," Wirfs said.
