Tyreek Hill’s Reaction to Jalen Ramsey Trade Sparks Talk of Chiefs Reunion

In case you missed it, the Miami Dolphins continued to tear apart their playoff roster from a couple of years ago on June 30, trading away star cornerback Jalen Ramsey and starting tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers for star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and draft capital, and Tyreek Hill’s reaction to the news quickly caught the attention of Chiefs Kingdom.

Tyreek Hill's Jalen Ramsey trade reaction caught the attention of Chiefs Kingdom.

Sharing the popular Will Smith GIF on X — which shows Smith’s character on the hit TV show, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” standing all alone in an empty house for the final episode — Hill captioned the post with one single emoji: “🥲.”

Not long after Hill’s very timely social media post, which garnered over 40,000 likes in under seven hours, Chiefs trade chatter started flooding into his comment section.

The most popular response urged Hill to “come back to KC on vet [minimum] deal,” which is obviously not going to happen, but the superstar’s reaction sparked the idea of a Kansas City reunion, all the same.

“Time to come home,” another fan wrote, with a GIF of Hill in a Chiefs jersey.

And the betting site, DraftKings Sportsbook, even pondered if it is “time to go back where it all started? 🤔”

Other KC fans quoted this post as well, although they had a lot of competition from the Pittsburgh community, who all pushed Hill to join his former Miami teammates on the Steelers.

Cap Figures Behind a Potential Tyreek Hill Trade Back to the Chiefs

Forget for a moment if KC is interested and forget if the Dolphins would ever be willing to send Hill back to the Chiefs — which would be career suicide for general manager Chris Grier. Before we even contemplate all that, the first question is if Kansas City even has the cap space to trade for Hill.

As of June 30, they do not. Plain and simple.

Hill’s 2025 cap hit is approximately $27.7 million. Meanwhile, the Chiefs only have a little over $10.89 million in available cap space at this time.

Now, that doesn’t mean this trade would be impossible. For starters, KC general manager Brett Veach could work something out where Miami pays a portion of Hill’s salary to facilitate the deal, lowering his cap hit.

The Dolphins just did this in the Jalen Ramsey trade, paying an extra $3 million of the cornerback’s contract ($7 million total), which left the Steelers with approximately $26.6 million to pay (per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport).

To get Miami to do this, the Chiefs would likely have to offer more back in return (in terms of draft capital).

Of course, Kansas City could also work to free up more cap space. A Trey Smith extension could help with this, as his cap hit is currently a guaranteed $23.402 million. An extension would lower that figure significantly.

Hill’s contract could also be reworked by the Chiefs in the event of a trade.

Should KC Attempt to Reacquire Tyreek Hill?

At the end of the day, Patrick Mahomes put up his best numbers as a quarterback with Hill on the roster. So, if all things were equal and Hill was a free agent, it’d be hard to argue against a reunion, assuming the contract numbers were reasonable.

But that’s the issue right there, and the reason Hill was traded away in the first place. His contract demands have never been team-friendly, and that’s totally fair.

Hill has earned his right to be expensive as a player, but as a perennial Super Bowl contender, the Chiefs cannot and should not attempt to reacquire him.

They have to build their rosters in other, more creative ways, especially when they have big money invested in Mahomes, Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, Smith, Jawaan Taylor and more.

Kansas City has also assembled a young and dynamic receiving corps, centered around Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and rookie Jalen Royals. Bringing in Hill would just interfere with their long-term development, even if the short-term impact of “the Cheetah” might help put the 2025 offense over the top.
