Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah comments on contract status with clear message about his future

Two months ago, the Minnesota Vikings made it clear what they wanted their future to look like. They gave head coach Kevin O'Connell a well-deserved contract extension to keep him around for a long time. The deal is likely through the 2029 season and, after starting his head coaching career 34-17, it was well deserved.

We all knew that O'Connell deserved his contract extension. However, there was still one more that needed to occur. When would general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah get his extension?

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah comments on potential contract extension

It's rather odd right now that Adofo-Mensah doesn't have a contract extension right now. He just completed a brilliant free agency in fortifying the roster to a great point and he deserves to get one.

"You know, I think when you sit down in a conversation with me and interview me, and you get to know me, the person I am, integrity wise, I don't think you'd ever question whether I do the right thing by the organization for the future, and I think they continue to trust that. Again, if you spend time with me every day I got I'm not perfect. I have my faults, but, you know, willingness to do the right thing by the organization is not one of them. And so I don't think they worry about that. I know I don't because, again, I plan to be, you know, the person that's here when we ultimately accomplish our goals. And that's what I'm working towards.

"It's funny, with a player, somebody asked me, a player agent asked me that. These things don't come in straight lines. They kind of come with dribbs and drives, and then big discoveries, and then you're here, and then it's like building a house. A lot of the time takes, you know, the build a lot, you know, takes 90% of time to go out of it in the last 10% you know how that goes. So I can't tell you exactly where that is. I wish I could give you a simple, clean answer. I know that there's positive dialog happening with my representatives and theirs, and then meet with them as well. Again, it's probably on me that it's not going quicker, because, again, I wake up every morning focus on the things that I need to focus on to get this team to where they want to go, that mindset that it's my job to be the circuit leader for them, that doesn't change just because a contract maybe has a year left on it."

It's a very well-articulated answer from Adofo-Mensah, which has become his specialty over the years. At his season-ending press conference, he articulated some of the same points.

"So, you know, my conversations with them, with anybody else, I think it was at a Minnesota football game earlier this year, and somebody said, good luck with the contract. And it like kind of opened me up, because that's just not how I live my life. I don't think I'm entitled to anything. If I signed that contract tomorrow, I'd be running like I was scared, you know, just trying to always earn it. If somebody's chasing you, somebody's trying to be better than you, you gotta, you gotta. So I don't really spend a ton of time of that thinking about that. I'm unbelievably grateful to be the general manager of the Vikings, and I want to continue to be, so I'm gonna leave this office to the Vikings and work hard to try and improve this team, and whatever comes in the future will come. But that's where I'm at right now."

The entire time, Adofo-Mensah has maintained the same calm demeanor about his extension. Considering how calculated he is about the entire situation, it's hard to blame him. Adofo-Mensah is incredibly thoughtful when it comes to everything he does, so this is no different.

Will Adofo-Mensah end up getting an extension? Only time will tell on that.
