Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson reportedly re-tore his Achilles tendon just three months after the original injury, potentially jeopardizing his entire 2025 season. He underwent surgery on Thursday to repair it for the second time.
The second injury could save the Browns $92 million.
It all depends on how the injury occurred. If Watson re-tore the Achilles tendon by doing something that his contract specifically prohibits, it could wipe out the remaining $46 million salary for 2025 and the $46 million for 2026.
Per the contract, according to Pro Football Talk, voids the remaining guaranteed money if Watson is injured “as a result of skydiving, hang gliding, rock or mountain climbing, racing of any kind including as a driver or passenger, motorcycling, use of any off-road or all-terrain vehicle, professional wrestling, boxing, use of firearms, scuba diving, jet skiing, surfing, bungee jumping, basketball, diving, and snow or water skiing.”
The team's announcement of the second injury indicates Watson rolled his ankle in Miami. If he was engaging in any of the activities prohibited by his contract, the Browns have a case to void the money.
But there's more. Even if Watson wasn't participating in a prohibited activity, his recent social media images show him walking around without a boot on his injured ankle. Since it's almost impossible to roll an ankle while in a walking boot, the team could still have a case if Watson wasn't wearing one.
All of this could be good news or bad news depending on what side of the Watson fence you're on. He could've played his last down as a Brown, and potentially in the NFL.
