The Denver Broncos made a staggering decision when they released star quarterback Russell Wilson earlier this year. This signaled the end of a short-lived era for the Broncos, who will now be looking to move on from what has to be considered a failed experiment.
It’s not just Wilson who Denver will need to move on from this summer, though, as the Broncos are now being urged to part ways with another key player on the squad, Courtland Sutton.
According to NFL analyst Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, one of the most important things on Denver’s plate this offseason centers around the Pro Bowl wide receiver. Holder argues that now would be an opportune time for the team to cash in on Sutton while they still can:
“Sutton has been the subject of trade rumors for a while now, and the Denver Broncos would get over $13.5 million of salary-cap relief by dealing him now that it’s past June 1. The wideout also only has two years left on his deal and is approaching 30, making it more enticing for the front office to add some future assets for him,” Holder wrote.
The cap savings are a crucial motivating factor for the Broncos, but perhaps even more important is the notion that Sutton’s trade value at the moment is probably as high as it will get for Denver.
Holder wasn’t done. The writer then went on to suggest that along with Sutton, the Broncos should also part ways with running back Javonte Williams:
“If the Broncos are being honest heading into this season, they’ll realize the team probably isn’t going to be a playoff contender. Williams is entering a contract year and has struggled to stay healthy since his rookie season, so the team should act now and see what they can get for him in the trade market,” Holder suggested.
Denver has already gotten the ball rolling on a soft rebuild and the argument here is that the front office appears to have no other choice but to commit fully to the cause.
