The Green Bay Packers just don't draft wide receivers in the first round of the NFL Draft.
That's a tried and true statement around Green Bay, so much so that it may as well be known as a fact. The last first-round pick the Packers used on a wide receiver happened in 2002, taking Javon Walker at No. 20.
That means it's been well over 20 years since the Packers have drafted a first-round wideout, but long-time NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper seems to be this is the year that Green Bay breaks its own trend.
In his latest mock draft on ESPN that factors in what he calls "the bulk of free agency", Kiper projects that the Packers will select Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka at pick No. 23.
“Egbuka's game is really refined,” Kiper explained, per Bill Huber of OnSI. “He is a great route runner. He has good hands. He reads the defense well. Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs all have injury concerns, and I'm not sure any of them are true WR1s when healthy. Egbuka … could make an immediate impact on this offense.”
Egbuka caught 81 passes for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns last season for Ohio State and he's collected a total of 2,868 yards and 24 touchdowns in four seasons with multiple quarterbacks throwing him the football.
What the Packers need more than anything else is a wideout who can step up and consistently be a playmaker. They have talent in guys like Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks, but what they don't have is consistency.
Egbuka was consistently a good wideout for the Buckeyes for four seasons, so perhaps he could fit the bill for the Packers if they do end up breaking their first-round wide receiver streak.
