Wladimir Klitschko vs Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson vs George Foreman, Lennox Lewis vs Riddick Bowe and more heavyweight super fights that never happened, but will Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury join the list

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury appear destined to meet in the biggest fight in British history, but there have been times when such events haven't come to fruition in the past.

Boxing suffered a major blow this summer as plans to stage the undisputed heavyweight title clash on August 14 collapsed.

Now, AJ must beat Oleksandr Usyk on September 25 and Fury must conquer Deontay Wilder again on October 9, live on talkSPORT.

Should they come through these contests, it's promoter Eddie Hearn suggested to talkSPORT a super fight in February to see them finally unify their belts early next year.

But what if one of them loses?

It would not be the first time a highly anticipated, major heavyweight fight did not materialise.

Mike Tyson vs George Foreman

When George Foreman staged his comeback in the 1980s/1990s, he remarkably regained the heavyweight title and became the division's oldest ever champion.

However, he admitted he did not intend to clash with a ruthless young Tyson rising through the ranks during this time.

"That guy was a nightmare in the ring," Foreman told ESPN years later.

"If he missed you with his left, then missed you with his right, he'd bite you.

"I didn't want anything to do with that guy. He was sacred and I was glad of that. I didn't want a part of Mike Tyson."

Lennox Lewis vs Riddick Bowe

Lewis beat Bowe to win gold in the final of the 1988 Olympics and a pro rematch appeared inevitable.

However, the fight never happened in the 1990s.

In 1992, Lewis became Bowe's WBC mandatory, prompting him to famously throw the belt in the bin as he insisted he wouldn't be dictated to by a sanctioning body.

They did sign to fight two years later, only for Lewis to be upset by Oliver McCall, derailing all plans.

Mike Tyson vs Riddick Bowe

Tyson and Bowe were friends having grown up together in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York.

At one stage the pair were even classmates in school.

They never intended to fight and the timings of their careers never truly aligned for it to happen regardless.

When Tyson was in his young prime, Bowe was still rising as a prospect.

Then Tyson went to prison as Bowe hit his peak and both began to decline in the years that followed.

Joe Frazier vs Ken Norton

In the iconic 1960s/1970s era of heavyweight boxing, the best fought the best on multiple occasions.

Frazier and Norton both had trilogies with Muhammad Ali, each beating him once.

They also both suffered knockout defeats to Foreman.

However, they never faced each other due to the fact they were very close friends and sparring partners.

Wladimir Klitschko vs Vitali Klitschko

The Klitschko brothers dominated heavyweight boxing for a decade, but of course never fought.

Wladimir simply explained: "We promised our mom not to fight each other."

This promise was kept for the entirety of their careers.

David Haye vs Tyson Fury

In late 2013, Haye and Fury signed to meet in a huge all-British heavyweight showdown.

The former champion and mouthy up-and-comer would never end up fighting though.

First, Haye was cut in sparring a week before the fight, forcing it to be postponed.

Then, when training for the new date in early 2014, he suffered a serious shoulder injury and was sidelined for two years.
