It won't be long now. Alexander Ovechkin notched the 885th goal of his career on Wednesday, leaving him 10 away from breaking Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky's all-time record (894).
The Washington Capitals captain wristed the puck past New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin during a third-period power play to tie the game at 2-2.
It was Ovechkin's 32nd goal of the season and the 10th in his last 12 games played. He's just one point away from becoming the 11th player in league history to record 1,600 career points.
The tally on the man-advantage also helped him pass Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman for 11th in all-time power-play points (595).
Ovechkin's goal also raised $1,790 for pediatric cancer research.
It was announced earlier on Wednesday that "The Great Eight" would donate the dollar amount of his total career goals each time he scores until the end of his career to the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative and the V Foundation. Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Capitals, pledged to match each of his donations.
