Despite the Denver Broncos’ 30-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 of the preseason, things didn’t go as smoothly when the team returned to practice the following Tuesday. Quarterback Bo Nix was quick to take responsibility for the lackluster session, making it clear that "it starts with me."
Nix, who had previously led the Broncos to a solid preseason debut, appeared on Up & Adams with wide receiver Courtland Sutton on August 12. During the interview, Nix did not hold back on his disappointment with the team’s performance in practice, acknowledging that the energy needed to improve, starting with himself. "I felt like, starting from me, the energy could have been better today," Nix confessed. "But I just got to do my job better. And until it’s perfect, it’s not done well enough."
Sutton, who was Nix’s top target last season, responded positively to his quarterback’s remarks, calling them "spoken like a true starting quarterback."
Bo Nix’s comments come after a challenging day at practice, where he struggled to avoid turnovers. After going 6-for-11 for 31 yards during the preseason opener, Nix faced a tough practice session, tossing two interceptions—one by cornerback Pat Surtain II and another by Ja’Quan McMillian, which ended the session. Despite the setbacks, Nix’s leadership was praised, with many recognizing his ability to take responsibility.
"Love the accountability from Bo," Zac Stevens of DNVR Broncos tweeted on August 12. "QB1 = True Leader."
Nix also had a bright moment during practice when he completed a remarkable 15-yard pass to Sutton, despite facing coverage from the Broncos' star cornerback, Surtain. Stevens posted on Twitter, saying, "Bo Nix somehow connected with Courtland Sutton for a 15-yard gain with Pat Surtain II in something coverage in 7on7. Have no idea how it got through."
However, the practice ended on a tough note for Nix, who faced consistent pressure from the Broncos' defense, leaving the offense with more work to do. Despite completing "three good passes" in the final period, Nix threw an interception to McMillian, adding to the frustration.
But all is not lost for the Broncos. With another practice coming up on Wednesday, the team will have a chance to regroup and get back on track. Nix is focused on the bigger picture and has a clear goal: improving day by day, leading by example, and making sure the team is ready for the regular season opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Bo Nix knows the road to success is long, but he’s determined to take responsibility and ensure the Broncos’ offense shines when it counts. With his accountability and leadership, the team is in good hands.
