Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford took a pretty sizable pay cut on Friday, which at first glance could mean that the team could potentially get Nick Chubb back.
But Ford salary of $3.40 million was reduced to a $1.75 million in a way that ensures that he stays on with a roster spot for 2025.
And it almost makes things awfully crowded around here.
Indeed, that, combined with the fact that the Browns drafted two young running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft ends that Chubb has most likely played his last game as a member of the team that drafted him.
Chubb has been with the Browns since they took him 35th overall in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite missing a decent amount of time due to injuries the last few seasons, Chubb still ranks third on the Browns' all-time rushing list.
This is due to the consistency when he rushes, as he averages just over five yards per carry. This ranks him fourth all-time in career yards per carry leaders amongst running backs.
But back-to-back seasons with season-ending injuries are problematic.
So is the fact he averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry in 2024.
Oh, and he's 29.
Cleveland hopes to have found their running back of the future in this draft. Cleveland doubled down with Quinshon Judkins and Dylan’s Sampson, who both have a shot at being long term pieces for the Browns.
Chubb had four straight seasons of 1,000 yards rushing and he looked like the best pure
But now, it looks as though the Browns are ready to move on from their franchise running back. There have been reports that Chubb has been in talks with an unnamed NFC North team to be his next home.
Although it will be tough to fill Chubb's shoes, but Ford and the Browns will have to try and make it happen.
Again, rookies Judkins and Sampson will also do their part in helping the team's rushing attack. And when you put it all together? A tough guy and fan favorite in Nick Chubb is going to almost certainly be moving on.
