It has been quite a period for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Liam Coen staying as offensive coordinator and then backflipping and taking the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job.
By now, most know how that transpired, and we won't delve into it again, but there is one element that might affect the Bucs the most regarding Coen's decision to backflip on his contract with Tampa Bay.
What this does for Baker Mayfield.
The Pro Bowler will have a third different offensive coordinator in his three seasons with the franchise. Baker went from Dave Canales to Coen and now to who the Buccaneers appointed this offseason. ...
As Josh Grizzard gets elevated up the staff.
Maybe ...
This is going to be especially hurtful to the offense, considering how well Mayfield played under Coen last season.
Baker had career highs in completion percentage (71.4), passing yards (4,500), touchdowns (41), and passer rating 106.8 while leading the Buccaneers to a division title and the playoffs for a second-straight season.
Now, he, along with the rest of what was one of the best offenses in football (29.5 p/g), will likely have to learn a new system and get it right quickly because, after back-to-back seasons of playoff football, there is no "building for the future," the Bucs have to win now.
After so much good was done with Coen, when news filtered through he was staying, that loomed as a key piece of business for the franchise as it kept the highly functioning offense together.
Now that he's in Jacksonville, Mayfield, who is enjoying a career resurgence, will not have to learn another system. But he will have to learn.
And so will Josh Grizzard.
