Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is, without a doubt, the best quarterback in football, and last year's Super Bowl win only confirmed that.
With a supporting cast that was severely lacking outside of Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice, Mahomes still found a way to beat the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and then the Baltimore Ravens to get to the Super Bowl and then downed the San Francisco 49ers.
But Mahomes didn't have his best year statistically. He lost the most regular season games ever (6), threw the fewest passing touchdowns since 2019 (27), and had a career-high 14 interceptions, his lowest-ever QBR (63.1), and second-lowest passer rating (92.6).
Ryan Clark, when asked to name his MVP candidate for the 2024 season, chose Mahomes and stated that 2024 could be the year Patrick reminds the football world of his greatness.
“So what do you do for that quarterback who had nobody last year?” Clark said on First Take. “You got out and get him Hollywood Brown, you go get him Xavier Worthy. Rashee Rice ascended last year, obviously he has some things to deal with. But I believe that Patrick Mahomes is going to be on one of those prove-it years. We were down on him as a quarterback last year, down on them as an offense, and all he does is find a way to win the Super Bowl. I feel like this year, he reminds us why we started having will we see him replace Tom Brady as the goat conversation.”
The Chiefs' offense did get stronger, and with Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy, Andy Reid has two home-run hitters now to complement Kelce, Rice, and the other weapons at Mahomes' disposal.
It is a rather frightening prospect that the defending champs have gotten stronger, but for the 31 other NFL teams, that's precisely what's happened.
