Earlier this offseason, the Denver Broncos took a flier on a guy who was released by his former team. Head coach Sean Payton needed a joker, and he got one in Evan Engram, the former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end.
Engram didn't get released because he was bad, albeit he did have a down year compared to the year prior. He got released because the Jaguars needed the money for their cap space. And, the Broncos just so happened to need a tight end, one that could be a big-time playmaker, and they got that in Engram.
Before getting Engram, it felt like the Broncos were locked as a team that would take one of the handful of tight ends in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. Guys like Tyler Warren, Colston Loveland, Harold Fannin, and others have been linked to the Broncos through mock drafts before they signed Engram. Now, it's been wide receivers that are being mocked in the first round, or earlier rounds.
But, don't rule out a tight end being drafted by Denver. In fact, there is a huge chance that the Broncos draft one, where at is still the question at hand, but getting one that could be in town far longer than Engram, and one that will be a depth piece, would be key for Denver.
On Tuesday it became clear that the Broncos were going to prepare themselves for the possibility of being able to draft the best tight end in college football last season, statistically.
Broncos to host Bowling Green tight end on Pre-Draft Visit
Last season, Harold Fannin Jr., the tight end who played for Bowling Green, was considered one of the best in the country. Sure, the competition isn't as good as maybe Warren or Loveland faced. However, the stats speak for themselves.
Fannin Jr. led the nation in receptions with 117 and receiving yards with 1,555 as a tight end in 2024. He earned Consensus All-American honors and was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year. Standing at 6'3" and weighing 241 pounds, Fannin excels in route-running and catching but needs to improve his blocking and movement flexibility, making him a likely Day 2 draft pick.
According to Luca Evans of The Denver Post, the Broncos are set to meet with Fannin Jr. on a pre-draft visit.
The stud tight end could come in as a rookie and be of immediate help. As his career goes on, Bo Nix will need a safety blanket, which is often what a tight end is to a quarterback. Fannin Jr. may not be Nix's go-to guy next year, if he's drafted by Denver that is, but he could serve that role in a depth position. Or, who knows, the Broncos may run more 12 personnel in 2025, where they ran it the 12th least in 2024 with only 90 total dropbacks in that personnel package, according to Sports Info Solutions.
Last season, they didn't really have a reason to run 12 personnel more, as they didn't really have two tight ends that they trusted to be on the field enough. That could help them, and especially Nix, tremendously in 2025 with Fannin Jr.
