“Dancing With the Stars” has not yet been renewed for a 34th season — but fans don’t have anything to worry about. According to the president of the Disney Television Group, an announcement is coming “soon.”
In an interview with Variety, Craig Erwich all but confirmed that the show will be returning to ABC in the fall.
“We’ll have news to share soon. You think about how the broadcast shows have found new windows and are being introduced to new audiences, but what the producers of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ did with TikTok this year has brought a whole new audience to the show,” he told the outlet in an interview published on Thursday, April 3.
‘Dancing With the Stars’ Likely Has Staying Power on ABC
Erwich also discussed how broadcast shows are consumed by viewers. Amongst some of the more popular shows — including “Dancing With the Stars” — it becomes something that fans look forward to each week.
“That kind of viewing experience of ‘it’s on tonight, and I want to watch it with my friends or my family.’ From a business perspective. it’s the best marketing way to create awareness for those shows when they go on to Hulu. We have a very vibrant, very virtuous ecosystem of circulating word of mouth and engagement between ABC and Hulu. We’ve really figured it out. I actually think we’re the best at it,” Erwich told Variety.
The popular dance competition show has changed quite a bit over the years. However, viewership was up on season 33. In fact, in December 2024, Variety reported that the show’s finale — with 8 million viewers — was the network’s top entertainment telecast of the season.
“The finale pulled off the largest multiplatform viewing for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ in both total viewers and adults 18-49 since the Season 30 premiere in 2021,” the outlet reported.
DWTS Fans Reacted to News That the a Renewal Is on the Way
Some fans headed over to Reddit to react to the show being unofficially renewed for another season.
“Can’t say I’m surprised with how well the last two seasons went, but I’m hoping they have a bigger budget next season,” one person wrote.
“I mean last season had great ratings and they broke records with the voting, so this isn’t a surprise,” another comment read.
“I mean this isn’t that shocking, season 33 had record breaking voting. the show isn’t going anywhere for a while especially when it would be more expensive to replace it with scripted shows,” a third Redditor added.
