Former Cleveland Browns draft pick has a chance to become a star of training camp in his second season

Rookies have already reported for the Cleveland Browns, and veterans are set to arrive on Tuesday as football season is finally here.

Former Cleveland Browns draft pick has a chance to become a star of training camp in his second season

The Browns are not opening training camp at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia this year and will instead get right to work in Berea, as they typically do. Cleveland is coming off a disastrous 3–14 season at quarterback, just a year removed from making the playoffs with an 11–6 record.

Heading into training camp, there are a few players worth highlighting who could break out and become the talk of more than one practice session.

WR Jamari Thrash

It was an interesting decision by the Browns to largely pass on addressing the wide receiver position this offseason. Their only significant move was acquiring Diontae Johnson in free agency. Cleveland had a chance to draft Travis Hunter but opted not to. The Browns clearly have faith in some of their young receivers, but the common denominator among them is that they’re unproven.

Thrash didn’t contribute much as a rookie, logging just three catches in nine games, but he flashed during OTAs—momentum he could carry into training camp. If he can emerge as a reliable third option at wide receiver, that would be a big win for Cleveland.

RB Dylan Sampson

The Browns landed a highly productive SEC running back in the fourth round, as owner Jimmy Haslam (jokingly, kind of) just had to have a Tennessee Volunteer. Sampson has a real opportunity to capitalize on early reps while Quinshon Judkins remains sidelined due to legal issues and an unsigned contract.

Even when Judkins returns, Sampson should still have a role. He’s a threat in space and adds value in the passing game—something Cleveland could use more of. Another option to help them get back to their wide zone scheme as well. Watch for Sampson to deliver a few sparks during training camp.

DE Isaiah McGuire

The Browns’ decision to move on from veteran DE Ogbo Okoronkwo signals confidence in their current group opposite Myles Garrett. McGuire, now entering his third season, was a strong run defender last year, finishing with 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

A former fourth-round pick and productive SEC pass rusher, McGuire has developed into a well-rounded young player. Year 3 is when many players make the leap, and for Cleveland, the best-case scenario for the future of their pass rush is that McGuire takes that next step and locks down a starting spot.
