Mike Tyson vs Frank Bruno: The sensational forgotten round which almost made 'dreams come true' | The Independent

The fan-favourite Brit famously fell at the final hurdle of his world title ambitions on three occasions – first against Tim Witherspoon, then Mike Tyson, then Lennox Lewis.

Bruno would finally reach his goal one night at Wembley Stadium in 1994, beating Oliver McCall over the distance to claim the WBC championship belt. He would lose it in a rematch with Tyson the year after and retire from the sport.

Of the five losses on his record, Bruno was stopped inside the distance each time. However, speaking in an interview with Tyson Fury by Wow Hydrate, the Londoner named a victory as the toughest fight of his career.

“I fought a guy called Jumbo Cummings, he knocked me out in the first-round, and every time I think of that name I think that I need to go to the doctors and get some counselling.

He hit me on the temple and I didn’t know where I was. I remember it like it was yesterday, that was my toughest fight.”

Bruno faced Floyd ‘Jumbo’ Cummings in his 19th professional bout at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983. The Brit survived a shot on the bell in the first round which put him entirely out on his feet, revived in his corner during the break with cold water. He went on to win by seventh round stoppage, sending Cummings into retirement with his fifth loss in a row.

The American contender – who served over a decade in the Stateville Correctional Center in Illinois for murder before beginning his pro career – is best known for a controversial draw with heavyweight great Joe Frazier. Of his 15 victories, he won 13 by knockout.
