The heavyweight icons enjoyed highly successful professional careers between them, dominating the division for lengthy periods throughout the 70’s and 80’s.
Shortly after he captured the world heavyweight championship for the first time with a sensational victory over Joe Frazier, ‘Big’ George locked horns with Ali in what is more famously known as ‘The Rumble In The Jungle’.
Despite going into the bout as the heavy favourite, Foreman struggled to get to ‘The Greatest’ during the earlier rounds and would eventually fall victim to Ali’s ‘rope-a-dope’ style and suffer an eighth round stoppage defeat in Kinshasa, Zaire. Ali died in 2016 after lengthy health battles. Foreman passed away just last week, with tributes from the boxing world and beyond pouring in.
Regardless of their incredible respective achievements, ‘Big’ George once humbly revealed the one fighter who he believes was even greater than both himself and his former rival Ali.
In an interview with TMZ, ‘Big’ George gave plaudits to retired five-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather, claiming the 48-year-old from Michigan was better than he and Ali ‘ever were’.
“Pound for pound, Floyd is better than me and Muhammad Ali ever were. This is a better generation [of fighters] by far. They’re smarter, they’re stronger, they’re overall just better fighters.”
Mayweather is often regarded as one of, if not the greatest boxer of all time, although it remains up for debate quite regularly. ‘Money’ walked away from professional boxing having remained unbeaten throughout his entire tenure, winning all 50 of his bouts as well as defeating the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya.
He drew the curtain on his career at the back end of 2017, shortly after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in their mega-fight, stopping the Irishman in the tenth round of their Las Vegas showdown.
