Ever since 2020, each NFL offseason seems to have had plenty of news and conjecture including former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That year, of course, the Packers traded up in the first round to select Jordan Love in the NFL Draft. In 2021, Rodgers, fresh off of his third NFL MVP Award, went scorched earth on Green Bay’s front office as he aired his disagreements on some of their decisions.
This led to the Packers bringing back wide receiver Randall Cobb in an effort to appease the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback.
2022 saw Green Bay give Rodgers a massive three-year $150+ million contract extension despite Love growing closer and closer to being ready to take over. And 2023, of course, saw the Packers ship Rodgers to the New York Jets.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Has Been Making Headlines Again This Offseason
The story of the 2023 offseason, of course, was Rodgers joining the Jets and the hype that surrounded New York as they hoped adding the four-time NFL MVP would make them into Super Bowl contenders. Of course, that did not happen. Rodgers tore his Achilles early in Week One and missed the entire season.
But that did not dim the hopes of Jets fans for 2024. New York finished 7-10 without him and they were sure that adding the future Hall of Fame quarterback to their seemingly talented roster would put them over the top and into contention.
That did not happen either.
Instead, Rodgers and the Jets finished 5-12 in what was a a disappointing season in every sense of the word. With a new head coach and general manager in tow, New York kicked off the annual Rodgers offseason watch by informing him that he is being released and they are going in a different direction at quarterback.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Could Get a Call from the New Orleans Saints
Over the course of this offseason, Rodgers has been linked to a short list of teams. Realistically, though, there is just one team that currently appears to be willing to sign the former Packers quarterback: the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It is fairly well-known at this point that the four-time NFL MVP reached out to the Minnesota Vikings, but was told they did not want him and instead are moving forward with JJ McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL and has no NFL experience.
The New York Giants had expressed interest, but have since signed Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson.
Only the Steelers have hosted Rodgers, and he even had a private workout with two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, whom Pittsburgh acquired earlier this offseason.
But while all signs are pointing to him signing with the Steelers, a shoulder injury suffered by New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has many believing that a new team could be in play for the future Hall of Famer.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk recently wrote, “Expect to see a report, sooner than later, that the Saints have reached out. Whether it goes anywhere remains to be seen. However, New Orleans becomes another option for Rodgers.”
The problem, though, is that the Saints are nowhere near being contenders for a Super Bowl, which is what Rodgers will want from any team that he signs with. Furthermore, the Steelers have better talent around the quarterback position.
Finally, there is likely no way that New Orleans will be able to afford Rodgers. They currently have $27 million of cap space available, but only $2 million of space in 2026. What is more, the Saints need to set some of that cap aside for their draft picks and practice squad. Realistically, they could offer Rodgers maybe $15 million if they do not plan on adding any more players for the rest of the year.
While there will undoubtedly be talk about New Orleans pursuing Rodgers, his going there simply does not seem like a possibility.
