How Teen Mom Alum Chelsea Houska Talks to Her Daughter About Safe Sex

Chelsea Houska DeBoer could absolutely see 15-year-old daughter Aubree following in her footsteps. Just not as a teen mom.

Though the MTV alum was just 18 when she welcomed her eldest with then-boyfriend Adam Lind, her three kids with husband Cole DeBoer have proven to be an excellent form of birth control.

"Luckily Aubree, I think, has been traumatized by her three younger siblings enough where that is the last thing she would want," Chelsea—also mom to son Watson, 8, and daughters Layne, 6, and Walker, 4—joked in a joint interview with Cole. Echoed her husband of eight years, "Just having her in the living room with the three little ones and in the chaos and the crying, that's enough. I just look at her and she gets it."

Though to drive the point home, the former Teen Mom star has also had the talk with her teen. Many of them, actually.

"We definitely have always had a very open relationship from the very beginning, so I think that's really helped," noted the 33-year-old. "It wasn't this one initial sit-down conversation. It's just always been an open communication there."

That's not to say she hasn't been driven a little crazy by life with her teen.

Now that Aubree is hitting the roads surrounding their South Dakota home, "It's terrifying," Chelsea acknowledged. "I'm like, 'Seat belt! Don't look at your phone! Look both ways 1,000 times!' I'm just overly a psycho."

The issue isn't necessarily that they don't trust the high schooler, noted Cole, Chelsea's costar in life and on HGTV's Down Home Fab (Tuesdays, 10 p.m.). "I just don't trust everyone else," he explained. "I mean you're just releasing them in the world on their own in a vehicle."

Still, the pair—whose 2014 gas station meet-cute turned into forever—are confident Aubree's on the right path.

"She's very creative, she loves anything artistic," Chelsea raved, noting that when it comes to future careers "she's mentioned photography. Just anything artsy, I think would be her direction."

And should Aubree's future point toward their growing design empire—the pair also run a South Dakota Down Home by DeBoers decor store that boasts wares with the same edgy chic aesthetic they use to makeover clients' homes—Chelsea is on board.

"I think Aubree could get into it with a creative space, because she's just so good at it," noted Chelsea, who also founded lifestyle brand Aubree Says. "The little ones, it's hard to tell because we try to bring them to job sites and then immediate we're like, 'Wait, why would we do this? This is so chaotic.'"

Though she could see Watson create something cool out of the chaos.

"He's so smart," noted Chelsea. "I could see him doing construction or something for sure."

That being said, Chelsea and Cole aren't ready to hand over their collection of black paint and elevated taxidermy just yet.

While they're open to other HGTV opportunities like their recent guest stint on Hometown Takover ("I would love to be a part of something big that was helping a full community," Chelsea said), Down Home Fab will always be their first love.

"It means so much to us," Chelsea said of their series, now in its third season. "And if that was something we could continue doing forever, we totally would."

Because while it's quite the juggle managing the series and their store with other ventures (Chelsea is also the co-founder of loungwear Maewear and photo business Belle & Rae Co.), the job comes with perks—like the occasional hot mid-day date.

"I feel like a lot of couples maybe couldn't be together 24/7 but we really are best friends," Chelsea said, noting they're frequently asked how they handle mixing business with pleasure. "We just try to make it special, like we will always try to sneak away for a little day date. I always say, we have four kids, so the fact that we get this much alone time is kind of unheard of in a marriage."

They haven't ruled out the possibility of a renovation down the line. When it comes to having kids, "I have so many friends who are like, 'We are done,' and they just have that feeling," said Chelsea. "And I don't know if I'll ever have that feeling."

But she does know it's been fun to build their shared future the same way they crafted their immaculately designed farm house.

"We try to look at it as, 'How lucky are we that we get to do this experience together?'" she detailed. "The highs we get to experience together and the lows. So, it's kind of nice."

Agreed her husband of nearly nine years, "When we started doing this, people were like, 'I could never build a house with my spouse, because we would fight the whole time.' And I'm like, 'We had the best time building our house. Now we're doing it all the time to other people's homes.' We're just having a blast."
