Ian Rapaport Thinks Broncos Could Trade Up for Speedster Wideout in Draft

The entire offseason for the Denver Broncos has been about improving their offense and adding more playmakers around quarterback Bo Nix.

In free agency, the Broncos leaned mainly on defense, but also added veteran tight end Evan Engram.

In nearly every mock draft, from the end of the NFL season until now, it's been rare to find a mock that has the Broncos selecting a wide receiver.

Ian Rapaport Thinks Broncos Could Trade Up for Speedster Wideout in Draft

On Apr 21, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Broncos a team that could trade up in the first-round of the NFL Draft.

"The Broncos have made inquiries about moving up in Round One, according to sources. But there aren't many others. This always could change when players start falling and teams are on the clock."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport then mentioned that he thinks the Broncos will trade up for a wide receiver.

"The Broncos will trade up, just my thoughts and not a sourced report, for a wide receiver. If (Tetairoa) McMillan goes early, Matthew Golden is the one that makes sense and I know Sean Payton love big guys, but he doesn't always. For instance, Brandin Cooks is a receiver he took in the first-round. A speed guy, really stretched the defense, that's a comparison here. The Broncos have made noise about trading up."

"Trading up for Golden is at least something that I could see Sean Payton and the Broncos doing, they're always aggressive."

After spending his first two playing seasons at Houston, Golden entered the transfer portal and made his way to Texas to play for the Longhorns.

In his final season of college, Golden played in 16 games for Texas and led the team with 987 yards on 58 receptions and scored nine touchdowns.

At the NFL Combine, Golden made headlines when he ran his 40-yard dash in 4.29 seconds.

In last year's draft, the Broncos selected two wide receivers, Troy Franklin in the fourth-round and Devaughn Vele in the seventh. Both played in at least 13 games last season as well.

In 2023, Denver drafted Marvin Mims in the second round and he was second on the team in receiving yards last season. Mims has also been an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in both of his first two seasons.

"There are a number of good, young receivers in this draft, and we'll see how that unfolds. I do feel good about that group we have, and I think that they've shown obviously last season, the jump we took offensively from where we were at to scoring on offense and all of those things," Payton said when having his pre-draft press conference on Apr 17.
