Is This Finally The Year Former Denver Broncos Second-Round Pick Breaks Out?

The Denver Broncos’ wide receiver corps may still be a work in progress.

Depending on whether Denver is able to trade Courtland Sutton before the 2024 campaign kicks off, there might be an opportunity for former second-round draft choice Marvin Mims to inherit a sizable role in first-round quarterback Bo Nix‘ supporting cast.

Is This Finally The Year Former Denver Broncos Second-Round Pick Breaks Out?

While Mims underachieved as a rookie, amid a disappointing performance from former Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, that could change in his sophomore campaign.

Is Marvin Mims the Denver Broncos’ Next Breakout Star?

As a rookie, after being chosen No. 63 overall by the Denver Broncos last spring, Mims caught 22 of his 33 targets for 377 yards with just one touchdown.

Might 2024 be a different story?

Pro Football Focus NFL analyst Bradley Locker put together a list of each team’s breakout star to watch this fall, with Mims making the cut for the Denver Broncos.

“For now, Courtland Sutton remains in orange and blue,” Locker points out for PFF. “But trade chatter continues to surface. Even with Josh Reynolds and Troy Franklin inbound, there’s something to be said about Mims improving in his second season. Although his 64.6 receiving grade wasn’t spectacular, Mims’ deeper numbers — 7.1 yards after catch per reception and a 15.2 average depth of target — suggest better production could be on the horizon.”

As things stand, it is a bit of a crowded receiver room.

Sutton isn’t the only roadblock, though, given that Franklin has a past rapport with Nix from their time together at the University of Oregon and Reynolds’ arrival after being a focal point in the Lions’ passing game.

But, Mims’ explosiveness is undeniable.

In addition to averaging 17.1 yards per reception as a rookie, Broncos quarterbacks posted a whopping 105.9 passer rating when targeting Mims.

If Mims can stay healthy, climb Nix’ hierarchy, and build on his strong metrics in limited targets, he has star potential in the Mile High City.
