Jason Robertson would be perfect fit for Rangers if Dallas makes him available

After a disappointing 2024-25 season, the New York Rangers are looking to shake up the roster. President and General Manager Chris Drury will have to be creative in order to improve the team with limited cap space, and several players with immovable contracts. He will have to leave no stone unturned in order to get the Rangers to improve and show that this past season was just a fluke.

Utah Hockey Club v Dallas Stars

One of the players that Drury should inquire about is Jason Robertson. Ever since the Dallas Stars were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals, Robertson's name has been floated in trade talks. He is the perfect player for the Rangers to go out and trade for this offseason.

Why the Jason Robertson is a perfect fit for the Rangers

Ever since entering the league in the 2019-20 season, he has been one of the best offensive players. Through 374 games, he has recorded 168 goals and 226 assists for 394 points. While he has not taken home any hardware, he's come close during his rookie season, finishing second in Calder voting in 2020-21. This past season, Robertson continued his scoring prowess, tallying 35 goals and 45 assists for a total of 80 points.

However, while Robertson continued to be a point producer, the most notable thing about Robertson's 2024-25 season was his defense. If there was one criticism of Robertson, it was that his defensive ability was far behind his offensive ability. But this season, we saw Robertson shake their narrative and become one of the most complete players in the league. His defensive-zone impact was 23% better than league average. This two-way ability would make him an ideal fit for new head coach Mike Sullivan's system.

With Robertson only being 25 years old, the expectation is that he will only get better. It's fair to assume that in a couple of seasons, he will become one of the most complete forwards in the NHL. Even if this season was the ceiling for Robertson's defense, he has far exceeded expectations.

With Roberston being one of the better all-around forwards, he would dramatically improve the Rangers' forward group. One of the biggest issues the Blueshirts have had is their defense. Sure, a lot of the blame gets put on the defenseman for that; however, the forward group does not help in this regard, specifically the top six. Adding a player like Robertson will significantly improve their defensive abilities.

The only issue with a Robertson trade is who are you going to give up to get him. With Dallas just three wins short of a Stanley Cup Finals appearance, they will not want to give up Robertson for futures. They will want an established NHL talent. The Rangers will also have to find a way to fit Robertson's $7.75 million cap hit. The most likely player to be included would be someone like a Will Cuyle or a K'Andre Miller plus draft picks. While it would stink to lose a player of their caliber, it's worth it to get a player like Robertson who may fit the team's contention window better than some of the established talent on the roster.
