Jordan Love showed he already knows the Packers pretty well with smart answer

Super Bowl week is an interesting period, where players and media members get together to discuss the past season and what's ahead. Now that this is over, the main focus around the NFL is the draft.

This year, the event will be particularly special for the Green Bay Packers and its fans, with the city of Green Bay hosting it for the first time ever.

But maybe some things won't change much. Or at least this is what quarterback Jordan Love is expecting. On Friday, Love was asked by Kay Adams about what he projected for the Packers in the first round of the draft, he had a funny perspective.

"It's a great question. Knowing the Green Bay Packers, I think we're gonna go defense," Love said. "We'll see, maybe we'll draft, I don't even know who's out there. Might well be surprised."

Kay Adams said that Love sounded a little bit like Aaron Rodgers with that observation. It's curious, because the Packers did not draft a single skill position offensive player during Aaron Rodgers' tenure—only defense, offensive linemen, and then Jordan Love in 2020.

And since Love got drafted, the trend has continued. Brian Gutekunst took over as the general manager in 2018, and he has made nine first-round picks—seven defenders, Love, and offensive lineman Jordan Morgan last year.

The last time the Packers drafted a wide receiver in the first round was in 2002, when they used the 20th overall pick to select Javon Walker. He played four seasons in Green Bay, and then four more for the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders.

By that time, though, the decision-maker was head coach and general manager Mike Sherman, a brief period of four seasons in which Green Bay deviated from the Ron Wolf tree. In 2005, they went back to it, hiring Ted Thompson, who was replaced by Gutekunst in 2018 with the same premise and similar core values.

This year, it does seem like the Packers might favor defense again. Even though wide receiver and offensive line are areas of need, cornerback and edge defender might be prioritized once again—just based on how this class is and what the Packers tend to value.

Jordan Love has only two years as the Packers' starting quarterback, and five total in Green Bay, but he already knows exactly how the front office operates.
