The 58-year-old from New York faced the Youtube sensation turned professional fighter in an eight round heavyweight bout at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on November 15.
It was Tyson’s first professional outing in just shy of two decades, with his last before that coming against Irishman Kevin McBride, who defeated him via sixth round stoppage back in 2005 with Tyson retiring on his stool.
Paul beat ‘Iron’ Mike via unanimous decision after a frustrating eight round battle to become the seventh fighter to defeat the heavyweight icon in a professional ring. Tyson was quite visibly a shadow of his former self against the then 27-year-old, who has won all but one of his career bouts.
As Paul now prepares to make his return to the ring against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr next month, Mexican legend and father of the latter, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, has given an honest assessment of Tyson’s performance against Paul.
Speaking at the opening press conference, Chavez Sr claimed he would have given ‘The Problem Child’ a ‘better fight’ than Tyson did.
“With all due respect, fighting Mike Tyson, I think I would have given him a better fight. He didn’t throw one punch all fight, how can you win without throwing punches? Tyson only threw punches in the first round. Who did Jake Paul beat that night?”
Paul faces former WBC middleweight champion Chavez Jr at the Honda Center in Anaheim on June 28. The controversial fighter from Cleveland has set his sights on securing himself a shot at a bonafide world title in the near future, and victory over Chavez would push him closer to achieving this goal.
