Julio Cesar Chavez Jr won’t want to be reminded about these 2021 remarks should he lose to Jake Paul.

Chavez Jr, a former WBC middleweight champion and son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, is set to be the latest opponent in the polarizing boxing career of Paul on June 28.

After initially sharing the ring with fellow YouTubers and a sportsman in ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, ‘The Problem Child’ has since largely racked up wins against mixed martial arts veterans and low-level boxing pros.

Now, months on from Paul’s controversial victory over Mike Tyson in their Netflix main event, the Cleveland native will face a younger but similarly past-their-prime boxing vet in Chavez Jr.

Suffice it to say, the Mexican has long been confident of avoiding the same fate as ‘Iron Mike’.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr once said he’d reject his purse and retire if Jake Paul beat him in boxing

In late 2021, after Paul knocked out Tyron Woodley in their rematch, Chavez Jr entertained the prospect of marking the former Disney star’s first pro boxer opponent.

The Mexican was looking to redeem himself after a humiliating loss to Anderson Silva, whom Paul went on to defeat himself the following year.

Speaking to TV Boxeo about reports he could be lined up to face ‘The Problem Child’, Chavez Jr expressed his willingness to share the ring with Paul and said he’d retire if he suffered a defeat.

And more than just staking his career, Chavez Jr said he’d even give up his purse if the inexperienced American beat him.

“I can only talk about myself, not about other people, I am not here to criticize anyone,” Chavez Jr said.

“I talk by analyzing boxing. I hope I can get a few million with Jake Paul. If he beats me, I’ll retire, I don’t get paid.

“I don’t want money if I don’t beat him,” Chavez Jr added. “Retirement — not interested in his money if I do not win.”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was urged to retire by his father after losing to Anderson Silva

If Chavez Jr’s father had his way, the 39-year-old would not still be around to fight Paul in 2025.

After seeing Silva outbox Chavez Jr on the undercard of his exhibition bout against Hector Camacho Jr, Chavez Sr called for his son to retire.

“I prefer that they retire if they are not going to prepare correctly,” Chavez Sr said of his sons to Boxing Scene.

“They do not prepare in the best way possible to fight.”
