The Tony Awards nominations were released on May 1, and unfortunately, Kandi Burruss’ Broadway production of “Othello” wasn’t on the list.
Still, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star remains hopeful. “Well y’all… Othello didn’t get the Tony nomination. Of course I’m disappointed, but I’m still beyond proud to be part of this phenomenal production,” she wrote on Instagram.
The reality star continued, “Every time I watch our cast, I’m blown away and inspired.”
Burruss made sure to give the leading stars Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal credit. “[You] both are delivering a masterclass in acting every single night. Truly unforgettable performances,” she stated.
“Congratulations to all the nominees this year! As for me, I’m already focused on what’s next. I’m not giving up on the dream,” Burruss continued.
The “RHOA” star added, “To anyone chasing a dream — don’t let a ‘no’ stop your yes. The journey continues.…”
Burruss’ “RHOA” castmate Drew Sidora replied, “You still WINNING!! Breaking down doors for us all….And you just gettin started…Enjoy and embrace the journey.”
Actress Taraji P. Henson wrote, “That is crazy to me but CONGRATS on winning anyway.”
Burruss’ Dream Is to Win an EGOT
Burruss was rewarded a Grammy Award in 2000 for co-writing the hit song “No Scrubs,” but she told ET that she has her eyes on a Tony as well.
“This is my fourth time. I really want an EGOT,” she said, referring to her pursuit of an Emmy, Oscar, and Tony award.
The “RHOA” star was nominated for a Tony in 2022 for her Broadway production of “The Piano Lesson.” However, the award for Best Revival of a Musical that year went to “Company.”
The following year, Burruss produced the Broadway revival of “The Wiz,” which brought in over $1 million in sales during the first week, Ebony reported in May 2024.
“As we are speaking now, we have just published our grosses and came in very high again, allowing us to remain in the million-dollar club,” Burruss said.
She added, “Audiences are attending in droves and returning two, four, and sometimes five times over to experience the show. We have had fans follow the show on the road to Broadway.”
“The show is two hours of pure fun. And this cast sings like a dream. It’s a hit because everyone has a connection to wanting a place to call home. We all have searched for friendships and family. ‘The Wiz’ provides that joy and belonging we can all relate to,” Burruss said.
