Frail Muhammad Ali arrived in a wheelchair but showed his famed toughness by briefly standing to wave to 250 guests.

Stars from around the world attended the Sport For Peace bash at the Victoria and Albert Museum in central London.

As the guests ate dinner, Ali was introduced by Sir David Frost, who famously interviewed the boxer in 1974.

The members of the audience, who each paid between £2,000 and £2,500 for their tickets to the charity gala, rose to their feet as a fanfare was played over the sound system when the sporting legend entered the room.

Ali wore a black suit with a open-collar white shirt, and sat beside his wife Lonnie.

Also at the top table were Boris Becker, actor Sir Christopher Lee; Lewis Hamilton, accompanied by his mother and father; Bob Geldof, and the current IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Mrs Ali addressed the audience to tell them about the six "core values" of Ali - respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, giving and spirituality.

Ali's younger brother, Rahaman Ali, 69, said: "He's very happy and proud to be here.

"He was a part of the 1960 team, and he's glad to be here.

"He won in 1960, and he thinks the US team are going to be the champs this year."

Ali picked up the gold medal for the USA in the Rome Olympics in 1960 in the light heavyweight class. He was then known as Cassius Clay.

After dinner, the wealthy guests we asked to bid for lots in an auction to raise money for charitable causes including the Muhammad Ali Foundation and Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease.

Winning bids included £12,000 for Olympics opening ceremony tickets, £20,000 for earrings designed by Angelina Jolie and Robert Procop, £21,000 for a tennis lesson with Becker and £50,000 for a weekend of driving with Hamilton.

The stars on Ali

Former tennis champion Boris Becker said: "Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time. The greatest living sportsman.

"To be in his presence one more time is a big honour and a privilege.

"He presented his sport all over the world. From an athlete he became a peacemaker, he became a global warrior and just a spokesperson for the right causes.

"He has had just an incredible life."

Former World and European champion, and 1988 Olympic silver medallist, Colin Jackson said: "It's absolutely wonderful to be here.

"Any time we can celebrate anything with a sporting icon, it's just fantastic.

"When you just look around the people here, you can understand and magnitude of this man."

Asked what Ali brought to sport, and the Olympics, the 45-year-old Welshman said: "He brought excellence. He brought skill and maturity.

"He showed that the Games themselves are about fun and young people.

"We have all got family members and close friends like him, people with a cheeky personality and who are good at their job.

"He showed sports stars that everyone can be like that."

Sir Christopher and Klitschko also spoke of their admiration for the former boxer.
