Kyle Chandler In Talks To Play Hal Jordan Green Lantern In James Gunn's DC Universe

The search for Green Lantern character Hal Jordan in the Lanterns live-action series may be over, as James Gunn's DC Universe is closing in on an actor for the leading role. One of the big TV shows coming out of The DCU's Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters, is Lanterns, which will explore the Green Lantern Corps in the DC Universe. While the DCEU franchise left out the Emerald Knights, the new DC continuity is wasting no time getting the iconic characters involved.

Kyle Chandler and Hal Jordan

Deadline is reporting that Kyle Chandler is in talks to star as Hal Jordan for Gunn's DC Universe in the Lanterns TV show. Though a deal isn't locked yet, Chandler "is in negotiations," while the search for John Stewart "is still ongoing," according to the trade. THR's Borys Kit further reports that Chandler doesn't have a film component to his DC Universe deal, indicating he may only appear in Lanterns.

What Kyle Chandler's Casting Means For Lanterns

When Josh Brolin passed on Lanterns for the Hal role, it did make it clear that DC Studios was still going to be looking for an established name for the gig. It also appears that Ewan McGregor, who was rumored for Hal on Lanterns, either passed or was never offered the role to begin with, following recent reports. With someone as recognizable as Chandler potentially playing Hal, the franchise will have one of its biggest stars yet across all of its upcoming DC Universe movies and TV shows that have been announced so far.

While it has yet to be determined what Hal's role will look like in Gunn's DC Universe outside of Lanterns (and, in fact, Chandler only signing a TV deal could indicate he doesn't have a future in the larger universe), it will be interesting to see how he will act with John. Since John will be the show's younger Green Lantern in the Lanterns TV show, Chandler is a solid fit for this version of Hal, who will be a "Lantern legend," according to HBO. What remains to be seen now, however, is what the history of DC Universe's Hal is like with other characters since he has been around for quite some time.

Our Take On Kyle Chandler's Casting

If the deal goes through, the DC Universe would be gaining a remarkable actor in Chandler for Lanterns. Not only did Chandler make a name for himself with Friday Night Lights, but his many roles in projects like Bloodline and his recurring role in the Godzilla films have highlighted that he is incredibly talented and could easily succeed with a leading role like Hal. Hopefully, more news about Lanterns will arrive sooner rather than later, especially in regard to who will be playing John Stewart.
