Mats Zuccarello’s 2-Point Night Helps Wild Defeat Kraken 4-3

Game Recap

At 12:01, Brandon Tanev drew the first penalty of the night. After a high stick to Yakov Trenin, he had to take a seat for two minutes. 36 seconds into the extra man advantage, the Wild scored. Matt Boldy sent a pass to Mats Zuccarello. He skated up to the faceoff circle and took a shot. Vinnie Hinostroza was up in front of the net. He was able to tip the puck into the net to put Minnesota up on the board first.

Four minutes later, the Kraken were able to tie the score. A delayed penalty was called for tripping Matty Beniers, but the Kraken had the puck in their offensive zone, so play continued. Jaden Schwartz sent a pass to Kaapo Kakko. He dropped the puck down to Adam Larsson at the blue line. He took a blast of a shot that sailed past Filip Gustavsson and put the Kraken on the board.

At 18:23, the Wild were able to answer back. Marcus Foligno skated the puck behind the back of Joey Daccord’s net. He found Declan Chisholm by the blue line and sent a pass to him. Chisholm passed to Ryan Hartman to his left at the blue line. He passed up to Jared Spurgeon, who skated up the ice with the puck. Once Spurgeon hit the faceoff dot, he took the shot and scored the second goal of the night for Minnesota.

1:41 into the second, the Wild wasted no time extending their lead. Frederick Gaudreau took a shot on the net from the faceoff circle. The puck bounced off of Jamie Oleksiak’s skate and into the back of the net. Gaudreau was credited with the goal.

4:20 into the second, Eeli Tolvanen had a great breakaway chance, but Brock Faber slashed him from behind, reducing his chances to nothing. He then sent Tolvanen face-first into the boards. Due to this, Faber was sent to the box for two minutes on the boarding call. In addition, Tolvanen earned a penalty shot. He skated up to the net with the puck, but Gustavsson made the save.

At 8:22, the Wild struck again. Marcus Johansson was able to get the puck away from Yanni Gourde. He skated up the ice with Gaudreau, making consistent passes as they skated into their offensive zone. Johansson had the puck again, and passed to Zuccarello. He sent it into the corner of the net to extend their lead, 4-2.

With six minutes left in the second period, Chisholm sat for a hooking call. With a minute left on the extra man advantage, the Kraken started driving towards their offensive zone. Kakko had the puck in the center of the ice and sent a pass to Oliver Bjorkstrand. He saw Shane Wright to his left and sent the puck to him. He let the puck fly once it touched his stick, and Wright scored the Kraken’s second goal of the night.

With 11 seconds left in the second period, the Kraken were within one goal. Yanni Gourde skated the puck behind the net. He used this to survey the ice and saw Jordan Eberle to his left. He sent a pass to Eberle, who immediately passed to Brandon Montour further down the ice. Montour took the shot, and the puck found its target in the back of the net.

With 2:50 on the clock in the third period, Jacob Lauko took a shot on the net that Daccord saved. He was able to recover the rebound and sent a pass down the ice to Devin Shore. Shore took the shot. The puck flew through the legs of Vince Dunn and into the back of the net. Dan Bylsma elected to challenge for a high-stick play. It was determined Lauko did pass to Shore with a high stick, and the fifth goal of the night for Minnesota was waved off.

As the clock dwindled down, the Kraken pulled Daccord from the net to try and tie the game. They were unable to benefit from the extra attacker on the ice. The Wild took this victory, 4-3.
