Muhammad Ali’s grandson Biaggio Ali Walsh suffered his first defeat as a professional on Friday night as he was forced to tap out to a triangle.
The grandson of a boxing legend has been put on the promotional fast-track by PFL, who nurtured his amateur career before he eventually turned over last year. But after going 2-0 with two dominant wins, he faced a stiff test tonight against Ronnie Gibbs.
Both men are natives of Chicago, but Gibbs brought a hometown crowd with him to help him overcome a difficult first round to secure the biggest win of his young pro career. Ali Walsh will now have to go back to the drawing board as he assesses his next moves.
Biaggio Ali Walsh taps out in third professional fight
Biaggio Ali Walsh entered the PFL Smart Cage on Friday night as a whopping -1600 favorite, and looked every bit that good in the opening exchanges. He quickly dropped Gibbs, who managed to survive through the first half of round one
With seconds to go, Ali Walsh put him down again, unleashing elbows that likely would have seen the fight stopped had he not been saved by the bell. It led to an intriguing second, but it didn’t take long for Gibbs to get to the ground.
Eventually he managed to get on top and lock in an arm triangle, which forced Ali Walsh to tap out. The Chicago crowd erupted for the hometown star who made his way on top of the cage to celebrate as Walsh recovered, eventually embracing his opponent in a touching moment.
Taking to Instagram after the fight, Ali Walsh wrote: “God is the Greatest. We didn’t end up with the result that we wanted but this experience will only make me better.
“Congrats to @the_emperor_of_finesse , you were very tough and resilient and have a great future! Time to fix the things I need to fix. Thank you everyone for the love and support!”
Biaggio Ali Walsh had winning start to professional career
With a grandfather as famous and beloved as Muhammad Ali, Biaggio Ali Walsh was always going to have a spotlight shone on his career. He is flanked by a star-studded entourage that includes his boxer brother Nico and rap icon Flavor Flav, who almost never misses his fights.
After going 1-1 in his first two amateur bouts, Ali Walsh was swept up by the PFL who gave him five fights before eventually moving him into the pros. He made his debut in Saudi Arabia, going the distance with Emanuel Palacio.
However, he got to show his vicious punching power in his second outing with the debuting Brian Stapleton in Florida last year. Within a minute, he had knocked out the replacement opponent and stamped his mark as a developing prospect.
