Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs played through the 2024 NFL season with veteran quarterback Carson Wentz as their No. 2 option on the QB depth chart.
Wentz is the most recent backup in what has been a revolving door of reserve quarterback options behind Mahomes over the last few seasons. And heading into the 2025 NFL season, the trend of backup QB turnover could be continuing.
On Monday, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler identified Wentz as a "name to watch" in the Cleveland Browns' offseason quarterback search.
Wentz signed a one-year, $3.325 million contract with the Chiefs before the 2024 season, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
If Wentz leaves Kansas City this offseason, it will open the door for yet another primary backup behind Mahomes in 2025. As it stands right now, third-string signal caller Chris Oladokun is the only other QB on the Chiefs' roster.
"It's been great, honestly," Mahomes said of Wentz before the start of the 2024 season. "You see why he was on pace to win the MVP (in 2017). The guy can make every throw. He's very smart, intelligent, asks a lot of great questions and he's been in similar offenses before so it's easy for him to pick it up."
Wentz started one game for the Chiefs in 2024, filling in for Mahomes as he and the rest of the Chiefs' key starters rested in Week 18. In a 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos, Wentz completed 10 of his 17 pass attempts 98 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
