Patrick Mahomes Has Chance to Make NFL History on Saturday
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will start his team's quest for a Super Bowl three-peat on Saturday, and will also have a chance to earn a new place in NFL history.
The Chiefs are set to host the Houston Texans in a divisional-round matchup at Arrowhead Stadium. Fresh off a bye week after finishing the season with a league-best 15-2 record and earning the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, the Chiefs start the playoffs as Super Bowl favorites once again.
For Mahomes, the game represents a chance to improve his playoff record to 16-3, which would put him in a tie with Joe Montana for the second-most playoff wins of all time.
Mahomes would still have a long time to catch the NFL leader in playoff wins, former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. The future Hall of Famer has 35 total wins and seven total Super Bowl wins.
Mahomes is coming off one of the worst statistical regular seasons of his career. He completed 67.5 of his passes for 3,928 yards, a career-low output in any of his seasons as the full-time starter. Mahomes threw for 26 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Mahomes said in November that the struggles this season gave him a chance to grow as a quarterback.
“I learned a lot about myself last year, just when I felt I wasn’t playing my best and we were kind of struggling throughout the season,” Mahomes said, via The Athletic. “I learned how to just find ways to win. It helped me grow up, to show that it’s not about stats. It’s not about how you get it done. It’s about getting it done.”
