The Cleveland Browns must get back to running the ball effectively if they want to improve on what was a historically bad offense last season. Cleveland rushed for just 1,608 yards in 2024—their lowest total since the 2015 season.
With the Nick Chubb era officially over, the Browns addressed the backfield in April’s draft by selecting two running backs: Ohio State product Quinshon Judkins and former Tennessee standout Dylan Sampson.
Judkins’ recent arrest and unsigned contract could keep him off the practice field early in camp, which opens the door for more reps among the other backs. Still, one player the Browns once traded for is facing an uphill battle to make the final roster.
Pierre Strong Jr. is fighting for a roster spot in training camp
The Browns needed running back depth following roster cutdowns in 2023 and traded an offensive lineman to New England to acquire Pierre Strong Jr. Since then, Strong has logged 399 rushing yards across 31 games over two seasons in Cleveland. But with the backfield getting younger and deeper, Strong is now on the outside looking in.
Cleveland’s ideal 2025 running back room likely features Judkins as the primary back, with Jerome Ford and Sampson providing support. If the Browns can stash Strong on the practice squad, that would be considered a win. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound back contributes on special teams and has flashed some explosiveness with the ball in space.
As cutdown day approaches, it’s possible Strong goes unclaimed, though he does carry a manageable $1.1 million cap hit in 2025. He gave the Browns valuable depth in the aftermath of the Chubb injury, but his time in Cleveland may be nearing its end.
