The NHL’s decision to suspend New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe for eight games, matching the longest issued in the last six seasons, has drawn heavy criticism from New York Post columnist Larry Brooks
Brooks took to X to voice his concerns, accusing the NHL of “selective prosecution” of the Rangers enforcer while also urging Rempe to appeal the suspension.
“Selective prosecution,” Brooks wrote. “Rempe should appeal.
The suspension stems from a hit Rempe delivered to Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen during the Rangers Friday night’s game.
In the third period, Rempe raised his elbow into Heiskanen’s neck, driving him into the boards. The play resulted in a five-minute major for elbowing, a two-minute minor for roughing, and a game misconduct.
This marks the second suspension of Rempe’s 22-game NHL career. The 22-year-old was previously suspended for four games in March for a similar hit on New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.
According to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, Rempe is a "repeat offender" under the terms of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.
The NHL Department of Player Safety, explaining Rempe's hit, said that the Rangers forward's action on Heiskanen "violated multiple NHL rules."
“During an extended period of time and during the lead-up to this hit, Rempe sees nothing but Heiskanen's back," the NHL explained. "It is Rempe's responsibility to avoid the contact or minimize the force of an imminent collision."
Rempe, who was recalled from AHL Hartford ahead of the game against the Stars, has yet to register a point this season and now has 24 penalty minutes in five appearances.
The Rangers, who are struggling to stay competitive, called Rempe up to bring energy to the lineup but won't have him available until the calendar flips to 2025. Rempe is ineligible to return until Jan. 9 against the New Jersey Devils.
New York lost once more on Sunday, falling to a 16-16-1 record and 33 total points having lost 12 of their last 16 games and sitting sixth in the Metropolitan Division.
