Rangers sign Trey Fix-Wolansky to one-year contract

On Thursday, New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury announced that the team has signed Trey Fix-Wolansky to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal carries an NHL cap hit of $775,000.

Fix-Wolansky is transitioning to a new organization for the first time in his professional career. The Edmonton native has been in the Columbus Blue Jackets system since the team took him in the seventh round, 204th overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft.

The former Edmonton Oil King has had a little time in the NHL, making his debut with the Blue Jackets during the 2021-22 season. He played a career-high 11 games in Columbus in 2023-24, scoring two goals and an assist for three points.

In 26 NHL appearances across three seasons, Fix-Wolansky has scored four goals and two assists for six points.

Even though he has played in the big leagues, Fix-Wolansky has been best known for his work in the American Hockey League with the Cleveland Monsters, the Blue Jackets’ primary affiliate. After a couple of bumpy years at the beginning of his career, he turned things up a notch during the 2022-23 season, setting career highs in goals (29), assists (42) and points (71) in 61 games. That year, Fix-Wolansky finished seventh in the league in scoring. He followed that up with back-to-back 60-point seasons, establishing himself as one of the best players in franchise history.

In leaving the Monsters, a team that has been in operation since the 2006-07 season, Fix-Wolansky is the franchise regular-season leader in goals (112), assists (147), points (259), power-play goals (34) and game-winning goals (22). The 26-year-old is third in the team’s history for games played, having appeared in 289 games for Cleveland. He’s also posted 13 points in 23 Calder Cup Playoff affairs.
