The New York Rangers are sending the Pittsburgh Penguins the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft to complete the J.T. Miller trade between the Rangers and Vancouver Canucks, according to multiple reports.
Breaking: Rangers have notifed the NHL that they are sending this year's 12th overall first-rounder to Pittsburgh to complete the JT Miller deal instead of deferring the transfer to 2026, Post has learned.

The New York Post’s Larry Brooks, as well as The Athletic’s Peter Baugh, Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun reported the news, with LeBrun adding that the logic is they would rather keep the 2026 first-round pick in case the Rangers are a contender next season and want to retain a trade chip. The 2026 draft pick would have been unprotected.
Rangers have officialy decided on sending the 12th overall pick in Friday's draft to Pittsburgh (the conditional 1st originally traded to Van for JT Miller, then flipped to Pitt by Van). Part of the thinking in keeping next year's 1st Rd pick instead is that it might be a trade…

Last January, the Canucks traded Miller , along with defensemen Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington, to the Rangers in exchange for forward Filip Chytin, defenseman Victor Mancini and a 2025 first-round pick, which was top-13 protected.
One day later, the Canucks traded that first-round pick , along with forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais and prospect Melvin Fernstrom to the Penguins, acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor.
The Penguins now have both the 11th and 12th overall picks in this week’s draft, as well six total picks in the first three rounds.
Miller, 32, scored 22 goals and 48 assists for 70 points in 72 games between the Canucks and Rangers in 2024-25.
