Steelers Will Have Competition if They Want to Keep Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson’s market widened after quarterback dominos began to fall on Friday in Los Angeles.

The Pittsburgh Steelers saw the first domino of the quarterback offseason board fall as Matthew Stafford elected to stay with the Los Angeles Rams. After this was reported on Friday, further reports surfaced that Russell Wilson has two new suitors in play as the new league year approaches.

The two new teams are the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders. Both teams had reported interest in bringing Wilson on board before he joined the Steelers last March. The Raiders are interested in bringing in a proven veteran, as are the Giants, as they are evaluating Sam Darnold and Aaron Rodgers, respectively.

It would make sense not only based on conversations last year but also on changes in organizational structure. The Raiders hired Wilson’s former head coach, Pete Carroll, and the Giants no longer have Daniel Jones–who Wilson likely would’ve competed with last year if he had gone to New York.

Wilson has reportedly stayed in communication with the Steelers despite a higher asking price. It remains up in the air who the Steelers will pick between him and Justin Fields. Fields likely will want to hear offers at least during the legal tampering period before making any decisions. Steelers general manager Omar Khan said his priority is to get a deal done before then.

Wilson got off to a hot start in Pittsburgh before things cooled off dramatically en route to a five-game collapse to end the season. The Steelers will likely want to keep the 13-year veteran if Fields removes himself from the conversation, but it appears they will have competition there as well.
