Janet Caperna explained why she and her husband, Jason Caperna, skipped Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick‘s engagement celebration after Tuesday’s episode of The Valley.

The Valley’s Janet Caperna Reveals Why She and Jason Skipped Kristen’s Engagement Party, Admits to Being “Dramatic,” and Recalls Awkward Run-In on Flight Home

After fans watched Luke, 33, pop the question to Kristen, 42, at sunset on a boat in Hawaii, Janet, 35, mentioned her past drama with Kristen, particularly shading Kristen’s comments about her marriage to Jason, 41, as she revealed that she and her spouse ran into Kristen and Luke on their flight back to Los Angeles.

“As much as Kristen and I are not getting along, she deserves to have a fun, happy engagement,” Janet began on the July 1 episode of The Valley: After Show. “The night before, she had said to [Brittany Cartwright], like, ‘I’m not comfortable with Janet even being in my hotel room,’ so as soon as I found out she was engaged, I thought it was best for me to remove myself.”

According to Janet, it didn’t “feel right” for her to attend the celebration, especially considering Kristen had just recently suggested that Jason removed his wedding ring when out at bars.

“She had just attacked my marriage. I truly felt like the best path forward is to go have a nice, private night with Jason, and I [and] send a bottle of champagne her way to let her know I am happy for her,” she reasoned. “I was being dramatic on the night of like, ‘I’m leaving.’ But in the moment, I really felt like the best thing was for me not to be at the party, and I kind of met in the middle of like ‘I’m gonna remove myself from dinner, but I’ll still stay on the trip.’”

In his own segment, Jason said that if the roles were reversed, he wouldn’t want Kristen present if he and Janet were celebrating their engagement.

“Your engagement should be one of the happiest things that happens in your life. If I was proposing to Janet, I wouldn’t necessarily want Kristen hanging out at that time — even though she was there at our engagement [years ago],” he noted. “It’s about them. It’s not about us … in her mind, it’s like, it makes sense to leave.”

After Janet ultimately agreed to stay in Hawaii for the remainder of the cast’s trip, her efforts to avoid Kristen and Luke weren’t successful as she and Jason bumped into the newly-engaged couple on the plane.

“Of the 700-passenger plane, it was like multiple rows of people, Kristen and Luke also upgraded and were sitting in the seats behind us,” she revealed.

Also on The Valley: After Show, Zack Wickham, 36, applauded Janet as his “star student” for sitting out the engagement party.

“That was a moment where I saw the Janet that I used to be so close to,” he explained. “She was genuinely happy for Kristen. That’s the Janet I know — the one that loves her friends. She understood and I really respected her for that.”

The Valley season two airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
