The Kansas City Chiefs have much more experience with Super Bowl wins than losses under head coach Andy Reid, so it’s safe to say the team’s 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday was a bit of unfamiliar territory.
Sure, the Chiefs lost one Super Bowl previously under Reid — a 31-9 defeat to the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 — but aside from that one hiccup, Kansas City was 3-0 in its other Super Bowl appearances during Reid’s tenure.
And Sunday’s defeat didn’t just sting because it was the most-watched Super Bowl ever or because the team fell one win short of a title, it was also the closest any team has come to winning three straight Super Bowls in NFL history.
The postgame videos that emerged on social media told the story of a somber locker room dealing with arguably the toughest adversity they’ve faced together.
Tight End Travis Kelce was dejected and uncharacteristically short with reporters, while other players including receiver DeAndre Hopkins and others showed some atypical snark in the answers they gave.
With a team reeling after coming so close to a history-making moment, Kelce revealed what Reid told his players as they adjourned for the final time this season.
“This one’s going to hurt. Let it hurt. Figure out how to get better because of it,” Reid said.
Sunday’s performance likely left a sour taste in the Chiefs’ mouths.
The team had just 23 yards of total offense and a single first down at halftime, and KC didn’t start putting anything together offensively until the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach and the Eagles let off the gas.
The Chiefs haven’t experienced defeat much in the Reid-Mahomes era. In fact, Kanas City has just 30 losses (26 regular season, four postseason) in the seven seasons that Reid and Mahomes have been together.
If history is an indication, the Chiefs players will likely take Reid’s advice to heart and come back in 2025 chasing another Super Bowl.
